After months of preparations, a proposal effort led by Brad and Beth Thorp will go before the Carlsbad City Council for approval on Tuesday, July 21, 2009. Brad and Beth Thorp are the parents of Matthew Thorp, a pitcher for the Carlbad Lancer JV Baseball team. Matthew's older brother, Mitchell, passed away in November 2008 after fighting a 5-year battle against an unknown disease.

In 2006, CYB sponsored a walk-a-thon event at Poinsettia Field #1, for the purpose of raising funds and publicity to aid in finding a cure to Mitchell's disease. This is the same field that is now proposed to be re-named as "THORP FIELD."

This proposal has been supported by CYB, La Costa Youth Organization (LCYO) and Carlsbad High School Baseball Programs. The proposal was reviewed by the Carlsbad Parks Planning Commission on May 18th, and was endorsed by the Commission for Council approval.

Thorp Field Proposal

Families wishing to lend their support to the Thorp Family Living Memorial proposal are encouraged to attend the City Council meeting on July 21st at 6 PM, at the City Council chambers on 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive (parking lot off Pio Pico, north of Carlsbad Village Drive).

Players are requested to attend in uniform, and to carry signs saying "THORP FIELD."
